Imagining New Models for the Church

During our "What's Next? Church Conference" on September 13, 2026, Jill McCrory, the pastor of Kensington Baptist Church, led a panel titled, "Imagining New Models for the Church." Before talking about new models, Jill demonstrated an activity leaders can use to spark discussion around “what’s next.” Using the metaphor of a coming train she explained the difference between being reactive (wait till the train is about to run you over) or proactive (plan on the coming train).

We looked at four areas that represented changes “coming down the track” – changes in society/culture; economics/financial; technology; and government/legislative. By considering what might be bearing down on us we are more able to identify what changes we might make now in preparation for the future.

Changes may mean new models of church. New models include ministry outside the

church building; mission-based church/social enterprise; partnerships and collaboration; and digital options for ministry/worship. We looked at some local examples of churches that have explored new models.

  • A “mission-church” that is primarily a food/shelter/services organization that

provides ministry/worship opportunities (rather than big church/small missions –

big mission/small church). This model is funded through grants and fundraising

and does not rely on primarily the congregation.

  • A “community hub” model where the church still holds Sunday services, but

started a separate non-profit that manages groups and performance space in

what was their education building.

  • A church that remodeled their sanctuary so it could be used during the week as

a coffee shop/gathering space and for worship on Sundays.

  • A church that is turning their unused space into a bowling alley and

celebration/game space for community use.
