Rest is More Than Recovery
Despite the snow on the ground, we enjoyed a beautiful retreat at the Hollowood Retreat Center in Maryland. Led by Rev. Dr. Carita Brown, we explored "The Art of Rest." We discovered that in the original Hebrew, rest isn't just about recovering from being overworked—it’s about stopping to marvel at what has been done. Just as God rested on the seventh day, we learned to recognize that because of Him, our work is already enough.

Practicing Active Rest
While the theme was rest, we didn't just sit still! Dr. Brown guided us through four "Active Rest" categories:
Movement: Rejuvenating our bodies with Gospel Aerobics and Praise Moves.
Meditation: Centering ourselves through breathing exercises and muscle relaxation.
Prayer: Engaging with scripture through a unique form of Lectio Divina called "Bible Blackout."
Expression: Finding joy through journaling, drawing, singing, and dancing.
The Power of Play
After lunch, we embraced the often-neglected practice of play. From Olympic-themed games to Bible Trivia, the room was full of energy. We may not all have won gold, but everyone felt like they made the podium!
A Meaningful Close
We concluded on Friday morning with a moving worship service at the Lord’s Table. It was a powerful moment as each participant shared their faith while serving the bread and cup to one another.
The 2026 Clergy and chaplains retreat was another great year of rest, renewal, fellowship, and connection. We are grateful for the fellowship we have in the Mid-Atlantic that makes this yearly retreat possible.
