Breakout Sessions Description
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Ministry with Immigrants
Presenter: Sue Smith, D.Min., LMSW
Summary: When immigrants and refugees arrive in the US, under the best of circumstances, there is a degree of grief and loss that follows them. But others have experienced traumatic events that have the potential to affect how they adapt to their new lives for years to come. This workshop will explore some of those events and how we can adapt a trauma-informed approach to ministry with our neighbors.
Thriving Congregations in a Chaotic World
Presenter: Chris Aho, CBF Director of Thriving Congregations
All around us, things have changed…and they keep changing! Meanwhile, our beloved local congregations struggle to keep up. So, what can we do? How might we most faithfully move forward? If there is an end-all/be-all solution to congregational success in 2023, it is elusive, at best. However, by faithful practice and intentional engagement, we can move toward our dreams, and even better, the call to which God leads us. During this workshop, we will examine some of the pressures that have come to bear on congregational life and then review a few simple, practical strategies for discerning how to move forward actively and faithfully.
2022 Civil Rights Tour
Presenter: Drew Hill, Pastor of Memorial Baptist Church Arlington, VA
In May of 1961 a mixed-race group of 13 boarded a bus in Washington DC to test the Supreme Court decision striking down segregation in interstate travel. The bus was attacked and burned in Anniston, Alabama. They were called the Freedom Riders. In August of 2022 a mixed-race group of 13 from the Mid-Atlantic hopped on a bus from Washington DC. There journey was very different. It was much safer. No one was trying to stop them. They were not worried about being mobbed, beaten or bombed. Yet they were riding for justice, for freedom, and for equality that has not yet been fully realized. Come hear there story.
